Abiotic Factor Dedicated Server FAQ and Fixes

Abiotic Factor's Steam-only and cross-play launch modes are not interchangeable, and its sandbox rules live beside a persistent facility save. If a session disappears or one platform cannot join, confirm the chosen mode and network path before rewriting settings. Every recovery step below keeps the facility data recoverable.

Use Force World Save, close the process normally, and copy the entire Saved/SaveGames/Server tree before changing WorldSaveName, sandbox files, platform mode, or server binaries.

6 common problems

Match the symptom. Make it right.

Open the answer that sounds like your server. Start at the top of its checklist and stop as soon as the server is healthy.

01CapacityCan Abiotic Factor run with 24 players?

What players see

The launch argument accepts a value above six.

What happened

The documented range is 1-24, but the developer warns that more than six is not recommended.

Why it happened

An accepted numeric value does not guarantee stable capacity for a world, host, or build.

What to do next

  1. 1Use six or fewer for the supported editorial baseline.
  2. 2If testing higher, use a copy and measure CPU, memory, save time, and join stability.

02MigrationCan I import an Xbox, PlayStation, or Game Pass local save?

What players see

A console or Windows Store world needs to move to dedicated hosting.

What happened

The current official migration guide does not support those local save sources.

Why it happened

Its documented migration path is for Steam local/player-hosted worlds.

What to do next

  1. 1Preserve the original save and do not run unofficial mutation tools on the only copy.
  2. 2Start a fresh dedicated world or wait for an official migration path.

03CrossplayCan console users join even though their local saves cannot be imported?

What players see

Save migration and join compatibility are being treated as the same feature.

What happened

Current dedicated-server crossplay supports the documented platform groups even though console local-world import is unsupported.

Why it happened

Network compatibility and save-file compatibility are separate systems.

What to do next

  1. 1Use no platform limiter for the shared current crossplay server.
  2. 2Configure an admin password so non-Steam administrators can authenticate.

04ConfigurationWhere is the active SandboxSettings.ini?

What players see

A sandbox edit does not affect the running world.

What happened

The native default is per-world, but -SandboxIniPath can select another Saved-relative file.

Why it happened

Server managers can deliberately own a separate generated sandbox configuration.

What to do next

  1. 1Read the actual launch arguments and resolve the selected path.
  2. 2Stop, back up the world and active file, make one change, then restart and verify.

05AdministrationWhich Abiotic Factor RCON port should I forward?

What players see

A generic game-server guide asks for an RCON rule.

What happened

The reviewed official dedicated-server wiki documents no RCON service.

Why it happened

Administration uses the documented admin password, Admin.ini, and in-game UI.

What to do next

  1. 1Do not create an invented public admin-port rule.
  2. 2Use Player Management and keep credentials/private files protected.

06StartupShould I keep old async-loading flags from a setup post?

What players see

A copied command contains -NoAsyncLoadingThread or a related workaround.

What happened

The current launch guide says the historical async-loading workaround is no longer recommended.

Why it happened

Old tuning can outlive the engine issue it attempted to work around.

What to do next

  1. 1Preserve the working command, remove undocumented historical tuning on a test copy, and restart.
  2. 2Use the current developer launch page as the baseline and add only measured changes.
