Before changing files, stop the server cleanly and create a recovery point. In Gone Wrong Servers, open Technical Details only when a step asks for a path, port, or log message.

10 common problems

Match the symptom. Make it right.

Open the answer that sounds like your server. Start at the top of its checklist and stop as soon as the server is healthy.

01PerformanceWhy does my server slow down or run out of memory?

What players see

The server becomes less responsive over time, Windows reports high memory use, or players are disconnected when the process stops.

What happened

The server used more memory than the PC could keep available and became unstable or was closed by Windows.

Why it happened

Memory use changes with the game build, player count, world activity, bases, and Pals. A single memory number or restart schedule is not safe for every world.

What to do next

  1. 1Check PC Capacity and current memory use before changing the world.
  2. 2Stop and start the server cleanly to confirm whether memory returns to normal.
  3. 3Lower the player cap or active base workload if the PC is consistently near its limit.
  4. 4If you use Pro, schedule a restart during a quiet window and let Guardian watch for an unhealthy process.
Show technical details
  • Use Task Manager and the latest PalServer log to compare memory at startup with memory near the failure.
  • Leave performance-related startup flags at their current defaults unless the current official documentation specifically calls for them.
02StartupWhy does the server stop during startup?

What players see

The server closes within seconds, reports that an address is already in use, or never reaches a ready state.

What happened

The server could not claim its configured port or could not read a required setting.

Why it happened

A second server process may still be running, another program may use the same port, or the active settings file may be invalid.

What to do next

  1. 1Make sure another copy of the server is not still running.
  2. 2Open Connection Setup and confirm that this server has its own game port.
  3. 3Open Server Settings, review any validation warning, and save again.
  4. 4Start the server and wait for Gone Wrong Servers to report Ready to Play.
Show technical details
  • Palworld uses UDP 8211 by default. A customized server may use a different port.
  • The active Windows settings file is normally Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/PalWorldSettings.ini.
03UpdatesWhy did connections fail immediately after an update?

What players see

The server still launches, but updated clients are rejected or disconnect during the initial connection.

What happened

The game client and dedicated server are probably running different builds.

Why it happened

A client patch and the matching dedicated server patch do not always install at the same time.

What to do next

  1. 1Create a recovery point before updating.
  2. 2Use the app's server update action, then wait for validation to finish.
  3. 3Confirm every player has finished updating the game.
  4. 4Restart the server and try one real player connection before inviting everyone back.

  • The Palworld Dedicated Server Steam application ID is 2394010.
  • For a manual install, the official SteamCMD flow uses app_update 2394010 validate.
04ConnectionWhy can I connect locally while my friends time out?

What players see

The host or another device on the home network can join, but players outside the home cannot.

What happened

The server works on the local network, but outside traffic is not reaching the PC.

Why it happened

The Windows firewall, router forwarding rule, changing local IP address, or an ISP limitation can block the path from a friend's PC.

What to do next

  1. 1Run Connection Setup and follow the result shown for this server.
  2. 2Allow the actual server executable through Windows Firewall.
  3. 3Forward the configured UDP game port to the hosting PC's reserved local IP address.
  4. 4Verify with a real player outside your home network. Testing from inside the same network can be misleading.
Show technical details
  • The default game port is UDP 8211. Use the value shown in the app if you changed it.
  • Share the join address shown by Connection Setup, not a private 192.168.x.x address.
05ListingWhy is my server missing from the community list?

What players see

The server is running, but searching for its name in the community browser returns nothing.

What happened

The server may not be publishing itself, or the browser has not indexed it yet.

Why it happened

Community listing requires the public-lobby startup option and may take time to appear. Large server lists can also make name searches inconsistent.

What to do next

  1. 1Confirm Community Server is enabled in the server's connection settings.
  2. 2Give the server a distinctive name and restart it cleanly.
  3. 3Wait a few minutes before searching the exact name.
  4. 4Use the direct join details from Connection Setup while the listing catches up.
Show technical details
  • The official startup argument for a community server is -publiclobby.
  • If you set PublicIP or PublicPort manually, confirm those values still describe the current connection.
06AccessWhy does joining a password-protected server fail?

What players see

The server is reachable, but a player is rejected, sees no password prompt, or loops back to the browser.

What happened

The connection path did not complete the password check.

Why it happened

A stale browser entry, an unsupported join path, a version mismatch, or a password that was not applied after a clean restart can all look the same.

What to do next

  1. 1Confirm the player and server are on the same game build.
  2. 2Try the community listing and the join method recommended by the current game client.
  3. 3Stop the server, re-save the password in Server Settings, and start it again.
  4. 4If you temporarily remove the password for testing, restore it before sharing the server publicly.
07SettingsWhy do my PalWorldSettings.ini changes not apply?

What players see

A value returns to its previous setting or the server starts with defaults.

What happened

The live server did not load the intended value.

Why it happened

The file may have been edited while the server was running, the reference file may have been edited instead of the active file, or the one-line settings structure may be invalid.

What to do next

  1. 1Stop the server before changing settings.
  2. 2Use Server Settings in the app so values are written to the active file and validated.
  3. 3Apply the desired experience profile, then fine-tune only the settings you want to change.
  4. 4Start the server and confirm the selected values remain visible after startup.
Show technical details
  • The active Windows file is Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/PalWorldSettings.ini.
  • DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini is a reference file. Editing it does not change the running world.
  • OptionSettings must remain one valid logical line with commas between values.
08World RecoveryWhat should I do if the world will not load?

What players see

Startup reports a save-load failure, the world appears to roll back, or the server refuses to enter the world.

What happened

A save may be incomplete or damaged after a crash, power loss, storage failure, or interrupted write.

Why it happened

Changing or replacing save files before preserving the current state can turn a recoverable incident into permanent data loss.

What to do next

  1. 1Do not delete, rename, or overwrite the current save tree.
  2. 2Open World Recovery and review the newest verified recovery points.
  3. 3Restore the newest known-good point. The app sets the current world aside before replacing it.
  4. 4If no verified point exists, copy the entire save folder before attempting manual recovery and contact support.
Show technical details
  • Preserve the full world directory, including Level.sav, player saves, and supporting world data.
  • A temporary or backup-looking file is not automatically safe. Validate a copy instead of experimenting on the only world.
09Cross-playWhy can players on another platform not join?

What players see

Players on one storefront or platform can join while players on another are rejected or cannot find the server.

What happened

The server's allowed-platform setting, current game build, or join method does not match the affected players.

Why it happened

Palworld's supported platform combinations and connection behavior can change between releases.

What to do next

  1. 1Select the correct cross-play option in Server Settings and apply it with the server stopped.
  2. 2Confirm that every platform has received the same game update.
  3. 3Restart the server and test with one player from each platform you intend to support.
  4. 4Check the current official notes if a platform stopped working immediately after a patch.
10GameplayWhy do base Pals struggle while nobody is online?

What players see

Players return to idle, hungry, injured, or unhappy base Pals after the server has run unattended.

What happened

The persistent world continued simulating base activity while the group was away.

Why it happened

Base layout, food access, pathing, workload, and game-version behavior can all affect unattended Pals.

What to do next

  1. 1Check food access, beds, pathing, and workload before changing global server values.
  2. 2Reduce overcrowding and fix Pals that repeatedly become stuck.
  3. 3Use a gameplay experience as a starting point, then fine-tune base-related settings under Show More.
  4. 4After a game update, check the official notes before assuming an old workaround is still needed.
